Ministry Experience
1967-1974 Minister, First Christian Church, Puxico, MO. Congregation in a town of 700 located in a rural farming. Grew from an average of 21 to 135 during our seven-year ministry.
1974 Endorsed by the Chaplaincy Commission of the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ to the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps.
1974-75 Battalion Chaplain with the US Marine Corps Responsible to facilitate ministry and pastoral care for 1500 troops engaged in combat and humanitarian effort, spread out over ten different ships in four far east countries. Ten baptisms and numerous rededications occurred.
1976-1977 Keflavik, Iceland. Responsible for Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and a Sunday Evening Evangelical Service. Sunday School grew from an average of 41 to 241. Vacation Bible School had been averaging about 70 during the previous years and it grew to over 500. The Evening Evangelical Service grew from an average of 100 to an average of 250. During this time I baptized 56 with many rededications.
1978-1979 Groton, CT Budget/Contracting Officer for Command Religious Program with Sunday School responsibilities. Sunday School grew from an average of 50 to 250. Chapel Worship in the 10 months I led it went from an average of 80 to 320. 14 baptisms and many rededications
1980-1981 Operationally deployed to the Far East. Administrative Chaplain for the 3rd Marine Division. Co-ordinated and provided training schedule for 20 Chaplains and 20 Chaplains Assistants.
1981-1982 Full time student at Yale
1982-1985 Primary Marriage and Family Therapist at the Navy Pensacola, Florida Family Service Center. Normally maintained a caseload of fifty. Very diversified from domestic violence, incest, rape to pre-marital counseling. Developed and taught six week courses on Parenting Children, Parenting Teen-agers, Personal Accountability Training, Maintaining and Building Self-Esteem.
1986-1989 Command Chaplain of the USS Acadia (AD 42) home ported in San Diego, CA At sea over 50 percent of the time. The ship had a total crew of 1300 with 400 being female. Average attendance at services at sea was less than one percent when I arrived but rose to 20 percent by the time I left. When an Iraqi missile struck the USS Stark and 37 were killed we were diverted to the Persian Gulf to repair the Stark. I developed and implemented training for our 1300 crewmembers to prepare them to deal with the aftermath of the attack. What it would be like to smell burned human flesh, to pick up human body parts when making repairs, how to cope with the Stark survivors and their losses. Arriving two days after the attack and having only thirty days to accomplish repairs the Seventh Fleet Admiral stated that the Acadia Crew put the Stark back together and the Acadia chaplain put the Stark crew back together. 15 baptized and several rededicated during this tour.
1989-1991 Assigned as Housing Chaplain at Murphy Canyon. Congregation had average 43 persons for the past 17 years. Grew from an average of 43 to an average of 375 in eighteen months. Program was studied by Dr. Win Arn and used in future books and a Professional Development Workshop sponsored by the Chief of Chaplains. 18 baptisms and several rededications.
1991-1994 Assigned as Supervisory Chaplain for Marine Air Groups 31 in Beaufort South Carolina. Supervised six chaplains and ten chaplain assistants in providing ministry for over 4,000 deploying all over the world. i.e. Norway, Finland, England, Italy, Bosnia, Germany, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, in addition to deploying constantly all over the states for training.
1994-1997 Assigned as Director of CREDO (Chaplains Religious Enrichment Development Operation) on Okinawa. Supervised five chaplains and six assistants in providing retreats Navy and Marine Corps Personnel in the Far East. Developed and taught weekend retreats on Spirituality, Forgiveness, Repentance, Commitment, and Marriage Enrichment. Directed Personal Growth Retreats for alienated individuals.
1997-2001 Assigned as 2d Marine Aircraft Wing Chaplain. Supervise training and utilization of 21 chaplains and 22 assistants in providing ministry to the 19,000 + personnel of the Wing. Personnel are deployed worldwide and so are the chaplains. Co-ordinate with Navy, Army, and Air Force chaplains wherever any personnel and/or chaplains are deployed to ensure religious needs and coverage are met. 2001- present Associate Professor of Counseling, Central Christian College of the Bible
