PCM 230 Basic Counseling Skills (2 hours)
A largely clinically styled course focusing on the kinds of basic responses, intervention, questions, observations, interpretations, etc., which may be used in facilitating the counseling process. (Every semester)
PCM 240 Marriage and Family (2 hours)
This course will give attention to the Biblical foundation for marriage and to practical elements necessary for successful family living. Topics such as communication, money management, marriage roles, sex, children, in laws, etc. will be covered. (Odd Fall)
PCM 327 Premarital and Marriage Programs (2 hours)
Instruction in ministering to those who are preparing for marriage, using training and retreats to meet the needs of the married, and preventative measures for strengthening marriages. Prerequisite: PCM230 (Even Spring)
PCM 328 Legal Issues in Counseling (1 hour)
This course will provide important and practical information on legal issues for counselors, with special emphasis on counseling in the context of a church or Christian ministry. The current legal concerns facing such counselors will be covered in a practical context. Students will also learn a framework for analyzing the significance of future legal developments. (Even Spring)
PCM 330 Introduction to Counseling (3 hours)
This course will be a study of the basic methods of the major schools of counseling. Emphasis will be given to those principles and methods which most schools share in common. Emphasis will also be given to applying Biblical principles and values to counseling. Prerequisite: PCM230 (Odd Fall)
PCM 331 Ministerial Counseling (2 hours)
This course is designed to aid the minister in the counseling opportunities most frequently encountered by ministers, such as grief, pre-marital, marriage crisis intervention, child abuse, and financial management. (Prerequisite: PCM230) (Odd Spring)
PCM 332 Crisis Counseling (2 hours)
This course is designed to acquaint students with the autonomy of a crisis and ways to deal creatively with crisis commonly encountered by ministers. Prerequisite: PCM230 (Even Fall)
PCM 333 Marriage Counseling (2 hours)
This course is designed to aid the student in his understanding of the Biblical basis for marriage, roles in marriage, problems that arise in marriage, and methods in dealing with these problems. Prerequisite: PCM230 (Odd Fall)
PCM 334 Psychopathology (3 hours)
A study of deeply troubled persons, including neuroses, psychoses, sociopathic personalities, mental deficiencies, and other psychopathological conditions Prerequisites: GPS 234 and PCM230 (Odd Spring)
PCM 335 Personality Types (2 hours)
A basic course outlining the major personality types, the strengths and weaknesses of each, and how to minister effectively to and through them. Prerequisites: GPS234 & PCM230 (Even Fall)
PCM 336 Youth and Family Counseling (2 hours)
This course is designed to assist the student in his dealings with young people and their parents. Principles of counseling will be discussed and applied to young people. Stages of development and common problems will also be examined. Prerequisite: PCM230 (Odd Spring)
PCM 337 Integration Seminar (2 hours)
A study attempting to integrate theology and psychology, pointing out the areas of agreement and disagreement between contemporary psychology and Biblical theology. An introductory course both in psychology and Biblical theology are prerequisites. Prerequisites: GPS234, BTH210, PCM230, PCM330 (Even Spring)
PCM 338 Tests and Measurements (2 hours)
An introduction to the administration and interpretation of various measurement tools, profiles, and inventories that can aid counselors in their efforts to assist people. Prerequisite: PCM230 (Odd Spring)
PCM 345 Counseling and Evangelism (1 hour)
Students will discover and determine how counseling (face to face, groups and lay-care ministries) can be evangelistic. Students will be given opportunity to apply Biblical care and counseling principles to ministries of their choice. Specific evangelistic application towards professional and pastoral counseling, lay-care ministries, decision counseling, one day and weekly events. (Odd Spring)
PCM 388 Personal Coaching (2 hours)
This course is a practical introduction to coaching, including definitions, models, techniques, coaching types, marketing, and available resources for use in coaching.
PCM 391 Independent Studies in Counseling (1-4 hours)
This course is an opportunity for students to conduct independent research under the supervision of a faculty member. A minimum of 45 hours of research for each hour of credit, plus a final paper or project are required for the course.
