    PMU 101, 102   College Chorale   (½ hour)
    The Chorale is an ensemble of men and women. It performs a variety of sacred literature. Programs and special numbers are presented each semester both on and off campus. (Every semester)

    PMU 103, 104   Vocal Ensembles   (½ hour)
    Student volunteers are auditioned and placed in small musical groups. These groups travel with staff members on college trips. Credit is granted if a group has been cooperative and responsible.

    PMU 113, 114   Private Voice   (½ hour)
    Private instruction provides special emphasis on the correct technique and interpretation of sacred literature. One twenty-five minute lesson is given each week. At least two years of voice are recommended for students majoring in music. (Every semester)

    PMU 115, 116   Private Piano   (½ hour)
    Private instruction stresses the fundamentals of sacred music interpretation. One twenty-five minute lesson is given each week. At least one year of piano is recommended for music ministry majors. (Every semester)

    PMU 117, 118   Private Organ   (½ hour)
    Private instruction consists of one twenty-five minute lesson each week. Fundamentals of organ playing, basically for use in the average congregation, are presented. Previous piano instruction or the consent of the instructor is a prerequisite. (Every semester)

    PMU 122   Music Appreciation   (3 hours)
    A broad study of the history of Western music from the beginning to modern times. Emphasis is directed to the six main musical style periods: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary. The study includes lecture, readings, and listening. Other fine arts related to each period are also incorporated. Students are taught to be better listeners and to understand how music has affected man and his culture. (Every fall)

    PMU 152   Music in Ministry   (3 hours)
    This course is an introductory level course in church music. Students are presented the basic elements of song leading, including music fundamentals, organizing a song service, worship leading, and reading the musical score. Other areas of study include music in the Bible and church history, the church music program, and problems germane to music in the church. This course has practical emphasis for preachers and associate ministers. (Every Spring)

    PMU 271   Music Theory I   (3 hours)
    This is a beginning course in Music Theory. Emphasis is placed on the writing of four-part harmony and analysis of chords. Study is also given to inversions and the analysis of figured bass. This course teaches the ability to sing and identify simple intervals and simple melodies. Some primary attention is focused on simple rhythm identification. Students will be expected to sing and write exercises. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor is required or demonstrated proficiency in knowledge of scales, chords, and intervals. (Every fall)

    PMU 272   Music Theory II   (3 hours)
    This study includes non-harmonic tones, modulations, seventh chords, secondary dominants, sequences and chromatic chords. This course teaches the identification of more complex intervals and melodies and the ability to sing them. Performance and dictation of rhythm exercises is included. Chord identification is also studied. Students will be expected to sing and write exercises. Prerequisite: PMU 171 Music Theory I (Every Spring)

    PMU 321   Music Administration   (2 hours)
    Special problems and techniques germane to administering a church music program in both large and small churches will be examined. Some areas to be covered include these: preparing a music budget, formulating song services, recruiting musicians, educating the congregation concerning music in worship, and examining types and sources of sacred music for all occasions.     PMU 322   Music for Children   (2 hours)
    This is a laboratory course designed to help students prepare and lead song services for children through elementary school age. Discussion is given of suitable material and methods for utilizing the most of a child's talent and ability. Students learn to use the autoharp, piano, and rhythm instruments to accompany singing.     PMU 323   Music for Young Adults   (2 hours)
    This course includes preparing song services, leading music for camps, and organizing and leading youth choirs. Materials and methods are included. Guitar chords and techniques are studied. (Odd Fall)

    PMU 324   Leading Worship   (2 hours)
    This is an upper-level course for those planning on leading corporate worship in the local church. It has a practical emphasis (students will lead and evaluate chapel services) as well as a Biblical study of worship philosophies (Odd Fall)

    PMU 343   Choral Conducting   (3 hours)
    Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in directing an adult choir. Conducting methods are studied and applied to practical situations. Musical terminology is included in this study. Each student will prepare and direct an anthem with the College Chorale. (Even Fall)

    PMU 356   Hymnology   (2 hours)
    This is a study devoted to the development of hymns, their authors and composers. Discussion of sources for texts and tunes and an analysis of styles and forms will be presented. Some work in composition in hymn style will be done. (Odd Spring)

    PMU 371   Music Theory III   (3 hours)
    This study includes secondary seventh chords; Neapolitan 6th chords; Augmented 6th chords; 9th, 11th, and 13th chords; and sonata and rondo forms. In this course students learn how to harmonize melodies in different styles. Simple harmonic forms are studied along with beginning compositional techniques. A final project is required. Prerequisite: PMU 272 (Even Fall)

    PMU 372   Music Theory IV   (3 hours)
    This is a study of 18th century counterpoint. Included are two and three-part inventions and a study of the fugue. Twentieth century techniques will be presented as time permits. This course includes a study of writing counterpoint and more complex forms used in composition. A final project is required. Prerequisite: PMU 371 Music Theory III (Even Spring)

    PMU 373   Music History and Literature   (3 hours)
    This upper level music course is a comparative study of musical style from earliest times to the present. Listening, reading, writing outside of class will be required to complete the course. Student reading reports and composer studies will be presented in class. Prerequisites: PMU 122, 171 (Even Spring)

    PMU 383   Sound Reinforcement   (1 hour)

    PMU 384   Music Notation   (1 hour)
    This course provides instruction in using computer software to create printed music arrangements. (Occasional)

    PMU 390   Independent Studies in Music   (1-4 hours)
    This course is an opportunity for students to conduct independent research under the supervision of a faculty member. A minimum of 45 hours of research for each hour of credit, plus a final paper or project are required for the course.
