CCCB announces plans for new Walton Student Center

The FOCUS Challenge

MOBERLY, Mo. — The blessing of a larger student population has resulted in an apparent need for additional student life space on the Central Christian College of the Bible campus. Last month CCCB announced plans to construct a new $600,000 student life facility to be named the Walton Student Center.

The current student body has limited space for recreation. Student use a portion of the stage in the Ferneau Center, the gymnasium when available, and both the dormitory and Pelfrey Hall lobbies.

The 6,000-square-foot Walton Student Center will provide a central location for students to relax, study, and have fellowship. Some of the features included in the plans for the facility are study rooms, a prayer room, a computer area, a lounge area with a cofee bar, an activities room, an exercise room, and a movie room.

The Board of Directors recommended and voted to name the new student center the Walton Student Center as a tribute to Professor William Walton's dedicated service as the Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Life for twenty-five years. Mr. Walton tirelessly fought for the rights of the students and student space during his years in this position.

Professor Walton joined the CCCB staff in 1980. Since that time he has primarily taught counseling and ministry classes. In 1981, President Pelfrey asked Mr. Walton to be the Dean of Students.

Mr. Walton and Shirley have been married for nearly 50 years. She served in Central's offices for 22 years, often assisting her husband. She retired in 2003.

Bill and Shirley are the parents of two children, John and Judy, both of whom are graduates of CCCB, and five grandchildren. The Waltons stay active and involved in campus events, attending most sporting activities on campus. They have also had a 10-year ministry with the Philadelphia Christian Church.

The groundbreaking for the Walton Student Center will be Friday, February 29 at 10:00 a.m. Construction is set to begin in the spring with a completion date in mid-August as the goal.

The FOCUS Challenge is the fundraising effort to raise money for this project. An additional $600,000 is needed over the next two years to complete the new building.
