Elva Snyder was a young woman in Des Moines in 1962. She heard our former president, Grayson Ensign, speak, and she decided to do these things:
sell her home, give up her job as the chief payroll clerk at a John Deere plant, and move to Moberly to attend CCCB so as to serve Christ more
completely.
Soon a need developed for a secretary, and she was asked to fill the need. That was her pattern as she later became a dorm parent also. She
never married, but she became "Mom" Elva to the many young women who were in Spurling Hall. Elva even considered herself a grandmother through
her "girls."
In 1967 Walter "Jack" Spratt was the president, and he determined to ask Elva to add another dimension to her job: to become the operator of the
newly acquired printing press. Elva learned to set the type, burn the plates, and operate the offset press. As the printing operation expanded,
Elva was asked to surrender her secretarial duties, to supervise the printing, including the series of male students that became the press
operators.
"Mom" Elva served Christ through CCCB for 36 years, and much of that time she was involved in the daily lives of the students. The Elva Snyder
Walk is a way of showing appreciation for her sacrifices and service for the students of CCCB.
