Camp Teams

If you enjoy fellowship, fun, hanging out with kids, evangelism, sports, and traveling to interesting places, then it sounds like the CCCB camp team experience is something you'd love. Every summer CCCB sends out two teams of students to area camps to serve high school and junior high students.

The teams usually consist of three or four CCCB students who spend eight weeks teaching, encouraging, and leading younger students to a closer walk with Jesus Christ. The camp teams also help with other events throughout the year such as move-in day, registration and new student orientation, and on-campus events such as In Focus.

A camp team summer usually includes six weeks of camps, one week of CIY, a final week at NYR, and one week off. On the weekends, "camp teamers" stay for free in the dorms and are given a stipend to buy meals and do their laundry.

This year each member of the camp teams earned $1000 per semester toward his or her school bill. Imagine having the opportunity to minister to hundreds of high school and junior high kids, travel to fun camps, and earn money towards your school bill! That's what camp teams offer. You can also use your summer with the camp team as your Ministry Field Education experience. Talk to your MFO advisor to find out how.

Check out these testimonials from a few members of this year's camp teams:

Being on a camp team is so much fun!! I had a lot of different experiences, but one that really impacted me the most. This was getting to know the campers and other staff members over this summer. It was amazing to hear their life stories and be able to help them with their struggles, temptations, and questions. Plus, just letting them know that they are not the only ones who go through problems and doubts. It is truly amazing to be able to help kids grow closer to Jesus through their relationship. Talking to the campers really opened my eyes to the situations and lives of kids. I may have helped some of them, but they all had a huge impact on me and helped me grow spiritually and mentally.

Without exaggeration I believe this was the best summer of my life up to this point. I have always been cautious to speak in spiritual terms, just because I think people over-spiritualize things and/or use God's name to speak their own agenda. However, after the first week of camp I felt that I was exactly where God wanted me at that point in my life. I wasn't by any means perfect, but that was the path that I was supposed to be on. One week in particular sticks out to me where God showed Himself to me and used me. One of the camp weeks had fallen through, and we needed another one to fill its spot. We only had two possible weeks open, and summer was coming up fast. That exact same week we got an email from a dean wanting a camp team for one of the two weeks we had open. During that week I personally made the closest contacts with kids that I still email on a regular basis today, and also with older Christian leaders that are an ongoing source for encouragement. There were a couple of the kids I got really close to, but through one of them in particular God taught me (and is still teaching me) the value of having solid Biblical reasons for what you believe and not letting other people shake you. This entire summer has just started me on a great journey and opened my eyes to a lot. After teaching and building relationships like these, I don't think that I can ever not teach. It is amazing how much God uses you when you take initiative and are just willing. You just have to keep the mindset that you are going out surrendering yourself for God to do as He sees fit - not that you are going to go out and do God a favor by helping. When you get to that point, He does more with you than which you could ever be worthy. It's the only way to live. Suddenly it doesn't matter how much money you have, or what people think of you--you can never live any other way and still be satisfied.

Being on camp team was something I've wanted to experience for a while. I grew up going to church camp so it was like a home away from home. I remember when I was at camp looking up to the camp teams and wanting to do what they were doing: spending a summer making a difference in kids lives. Every week was very different! We did everything from leading worship, teaching classes, leading silly games, singing crazy songs, taking down stage equipment, leading dramas, and helping in a bookstore. Each dean had a different style of how to run things. Now I have all kinds of ideas of what I like, what I do not like, which ideas worked, and which ideas flopped. Not to mention that every single week meant a new dean, new staff, new camp directors, new worship leaders, new kids! I really enjoyed meeting all the kids, getting to know everyone on my camp team, the other camp staff, and camp teams from different colleges. The best part of camp team was probably just being able make new friends, loving on the kids, and encouraging the other staff. It definitely gave me a whole new perspective on heaven!

Camp team was an amazing experience for me. As soon as I found out that I was on a camp team I was excited. I knew that God was going to use me in ways that I had never experienced before. I was able to step out of my comfort zone and into vulnerability where God molded me and used me to touch the lives of those around me. He used them to touch my life as well. The other two people on my camp team were amazing and we got to form great friendships and grow deeper in our faith together. This summer taught me so much about ministry and what full-time ministry is all about, and helped prepare the way for my future in ministry. There were also several opportunities that opened up to me through camp teams, including, a part-time weekend youth ministry in a small church in Illinois. Through camp I was able to meet the preacher and work with him, so when the time came to apply for the job, he already knew who I was and what I could do. The contacts made this summer were great, and we were able to work with some amazing people who truly have a heart for ministry. They really taught me a lot. There isn't enough that I can say about camp teams! It was difficult at times, but overall the experience was very rewarding and I would choose to do it all over again if I got the chance!
