Christian Education

Christian educators inform God’s people for their development and service in God’s kingdom. This program helps students understand the characteristics, needs, and developmental tasks for learning in all stages of human development. Students learn to prepare age-appropriate lessons that present biblical truth to the needs of learners. Students also develop the leadership role of evaluating products and resources that are available to assist the educational ministry of the church. (This program is available onsite as a major or a minor.) Career Opportunities Graduates who complete the Christian Education program are trained for ministry in a local church in areas such as children’s ministry, adult education, discipleship, small groups, involvement, and Christian education. Many Christian schools also accept a Christian education degree as qualification for teaching at the preschool and elementary level. Graduates may also pursue a graduate degree in education or alternative certification leading to initial teaching certification.

This program may be right for you if:

  • You want to work in a church or school environment
  • You desire to understand how learning is accomplished and what you can do to facilitate it

With classes like Child Growth and Development, Educational Psychology, and Creative Teaching, the Christian Education program is designed to:

  • Allow more defined paths to teacher licensure
  • Pave the way for easier transition to grad school through accreditation
  • Create more opportunities for specialized minors or certificates (like elementary ed or pre-school)

In this program, you can expect:

  • To study foundational courses, explaining the philosophies and methodologies of the teaching profession.
  • Participation in field experience of 300 hours demonstrating your knowledge of the field.
  • Practice teaching in a variety of settings, using a variety of teaching styles.
Degree Options:
  • Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education: 4 year degree [Graduate degree in education preparation, Christian school teacher in preschool and elementary level, director of children’s ministry, adult education, discipleship / small groups]
  • Bachelor of Science in Christian Education: 4 year degree [Graduate degree in education preparation, Christian school teacher in preschool and elementary level, director of children’s ministry, adult education, discipleship  / small groups]
  • Christian Education Minor: 15 credits [Early Childhood development / teaching skills]
  • History Minor: 15 credits [Licensure as a secondary school instructor of History preparation]
  • Communication Minor: 15 credits [Teacher licensure in English / Communication Arts preparation, literature and language skills]
  • Children’s Ministry Certificate: 2 year program [Church care specializing in teaching birth to sixth grade, departmental leadership positions involving children, parachurch ministries involving Christian education]
  • Teacher Preparation Certificate: 30-31 credits [Public school teachers in states where the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence is approved]
  • TESOL Certificate: 52-53 credits [Teaching English as a second language in ministry or language school]
